Australian Capital Territory

Canberra is Australia's national capital and political center located 300 kilometers south west of Sydney and within an area known as The Australian Capital Territory. The city blends stately government buildings in a superb bushland setting with rolling hills forming a distinctive backdrop.

The residents of the ACT enjoy the highest standard of living of any Australian State or Territory, with facilities far beyond any similar sized city in the world. Every year a Floriade Festival is held in spring and the city is awash with colour. Many other events are scheduled throughout every year. Canberra has many attractions for visitors - Australian Institute of sport, Australian War Memorial, National Gallery of Australia, Parliament House, National Science and Technology Centre, parks, recreation areas, monuments and the Tidbinbilla Space Centre. (part of NASA network) International Hotels, and other accommodation motels etc. are close to the city centre.

Traveller's Notes

We have been to the Australian Capital Territory many times.
Canberra the capital city of Australia always has something new to offer. You can journey to Canberra from Sydney by car in 4 hours on the Federal Highway bypassing only two country towns and not one set of traffic lights on the way. It's a wonderful drive through the countryside with little traffic.

We got away at 4 pm on a winter afternoon. We drove onto the motorway in Sydney and reached the southern highlands town of Bowral by 6pm and booked into a motel. Next morning was cold but the sun was shining which made the onward drive very enjoyable, although I have seen the countryside look better. The winter and the long drought made the countryside dry and brown. Usually around Canberra the countryside is magnificent.

The purpose of our journey was to visit the Australian War Memorial, which commemorates the sacrifice of Australian men and women who have served in many theatres of war. It's a large building of 3 levels housing items of all the wars in which Australian servicemen took part. It's a wonderful display of portraits, regalia of notable and distinguished personnel, models, particularly of trenches in France in the First World War and of actual aircraft that took part in all wars. A Japanese midget submarine captured in Sydney harbour is also on display.

A friend of ours from Boston visited the War Memorial some years ago and said he would come back to spend two days at the memorial. However this has not happened as yet. We spent one day there but must return again. We briefly visited Parliament House, the Art Gallery, Telstra Tower and photographed some of the places of interest shown here before returning home.
