Welcome

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
of ragged mountain ranges,
of droughts and flooding rains;
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror -
The wide brown land for me!

We are providing this section of our web site to give you, our readers what we hope is a a tantalizing glimpse of the wonderful antipodean countries of Australia and New Zealand.
Kookaburra Licorice is not a travel agency and the content in this section of the site was gained from our personal travels. We would love to pass the first-hand knowledge and experience of these travels in the hope that you may be encouraged to visit us 'Downunder'.
The tour starts with an excerpt from a poem called 'My Country' written by Dorothea Mackellar (1885 - 1968). Her poem was written in Maitland, New South Wales after she witnessed the breaking of a drought. This simple verse captures the profound dichotomy of the Australian landscape and has become an iconic part of the Australian culture.

Australia is the world's largest island, with golden beaches, jewel seas and population of 20 million. Australia is english speaking like America. When travelling it is safe to go anywhere, (except for a few spots as in any country). You will find Australians to be friendly and helpful. Hospitals are not expensive, doctors are on hand, (travel insurance is recommended) immediate help by ambulance and police as well as help if your car breaks down miles from anywhere. Our mobile telephone network is comprehensive.

What do you think you would like to do? How long would you stay?
Where would you like to stay? What sort of accommodation would you like?
You can fly anywhere, drive forever on sealed roads, and take long journeys by coach or train.
You can go on wilderness expeditions or cruise in luxury liners in the South Pacific or stop and hire a unit at the beach so that you can swim, walk for miles on golden sand through the clear water of the lapping ocean, and enjoy the warm sunshine
Australia is about the same size as the USA.
We have 6 states plus the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory.
The Australian Capital Territory is within the state of New South Wales and is where our Federal Parliament and Capital City, Canberra, is located.
Australia has its tourist attractions as all countries do. You can study all these attractions by clicking on to the linked websites of our tourist bureaus.
The Australian dollar fluctuates around 70 cents, i.e. you get about $1.45 AUS to the US $1.00. The cost of meals and commodities is about the same as in the US, ie. a cup of coffee is about $3.00, a wholesome meal is about $25.00 whereas you can get it cheaper at many franchise restaurants. You can also get a good cheap meal at most sporting and community clubs. These clubs are in the cities and towns in New South Wales. In other States, the cheaper meals are in most small and local hotels.
